Although most of us want to cuddle with our cat or our dog, we might still be allergic to our furry friends. At specific points, while we play with our pets, we might experience runny or itchy nose or urticaria. It can even be severe conditions like chronic conjunctivitis.

Even though allergic reactions can be a mild annoyance for some individuals, some allergic reactions can be severe. To prevent such reactions, we have to make sure that our living space is free from pet dander, fur, and just about any allergens.

So what can we do to prevent pet allergies?

Preventive Measures

Fortunately, there are several ways of mitigating allergic reactions around your household. Here’s what you can do.

  • Right after playing with your pets, you must wash your hands. Pet dander and fur can quickly get stuck on hour hands, and when we’re touching our face, this can cause allergic reactions.
  • Train and let your pet be familiar with a place where they can stay. That is an excellent way of keeping pets away from the furniture. Most types of fur can quickly get stuck on couches that are made of certain types of fabric, your bed, and other upholstered furniture.
  • For dogs, having a dog house can provide a fair amount of distance between your home’s interiors and your pets when they’re sleeping.
  • Bathing your dogs or two every week can remove any dander that they might shed.
  • It’s important to vacuum and remove dust on different surfaces around your home.
  • Carpets, upholstered furniture, bedding, and curtains can easily catch allergens. You might have to consider getting vacuum repair services in your area if you’re heavily using your vacuum cleaners.
  • Another way of ridding your home’s airways of dander is by having an air filter machine with HEPA capabilities. That is especially great for rooms were individuals might get allergic reactions.
  • If you’re consistently getting allergic reactions, you might want to take an antihistamine or other medications prescribed by medical professionals.
  • Allergic reactions can be severe in some cases, especially when these reactions cause most of your throat and face to swell. Immediately seek medical attention as soon as allergic reactions start coming done.
  • Lastly, before you get a pet, you have to do your research first. A good majority of individuals get an allergic reaction to dander from cats, but not usually from dogs.

Having a pet is already a big commitment in itself. You won’t just have to consider the monthly maintenance and expenditure for food and other essentials for your pet, but you’ll also need to let everyone in the household know that you’ll be keeping one. If someone in your home is allergic to pets, you might have to make some significant changes to your lifestyle while also doing consistent cleaning to most of your furniture.

If you want a pet, nobody is most likely going to stop you from obtaining one. Still, it’s important to consider everyone else in your house by following these preventive measures.
