Simple and Inexpensive Methods to Keep Your Home Safe from Burglars

If you’re investing big in decorating your home, you should do the same thing for its security. Installing security cameras and an alert system may not as fun as watching your walls get painted or buying loveseats, but your home’s security is your most important investment. Do you know that burglary happens every 25.7 seconds? Without an alarm system in place or precautionary measures, you’re opening your home to criminal activities.

But you don’t have to spend so much on a home security system. Yes, it’s definitely better if you can buy a garage door opener remote from Mareeba or other places, but it’s also okay to find simpler solutions. You can keep burglars away with these no-cost and low-cost measures:

Keep the Windows and Doors Locked

Contrary to popular belief (and what Hollywood movies want to portray), burglars happen more during the day than at night. Home break-ins happen mostly between 10 AM and 3 PM when the criminals are sure that no one is home. They are completed within eight to 10 minutes. Do you know how burglars enter homes? A whopping 34% enter the front door, while another 23% enter through the first-floor window. If you forget to lock your doors and windows, you’re giving the burglars easy access to your home.

Change and Update Your Locks

Check your locks. Are any of them damaged? Is there a possibility that someone else has copies of your keys? Are the locks easy to jimmy or pick? You should probably update your locks now. Make sure that no one else has access to your home. Also, don’t leave a copy of your keys under the front door mat or a pot in your garden. Everyone knows that. You have to rely on your instincts to never forget to bring your keys.

Light up Your House’s Surroundings

At night, let your lights remain open outside. Or at the very least, install motion-sensing lights. These will turn burglars off. They will get discouraged to try to enter your home if the lights in your backyard or garden are on. Consider doing the same for your indoor lights. This way, if they manage to enter your home, they won’t be able to move as freely because the lights are on.

Secure Your Valuable Items

Burglars will scout for homes that are easy to enter and with valuable items inside. If you leave your jewelry in plain sight from a first-level window, burglars will see it and target your home. Install window treatments such as curtains, blinds, and drapes to stop people from looking inside your home. You should also keep valuable items in a household safe than leaving them on top of the living room table where burglars can see them.

You don’t have everything to do at once. Relax. Identify the strategies that work best for your current situation. You can add the other things later. What’s important is that you do the basics such as locking your doors and windows and making sure that there’s no easy access to your home.
