We sleep on our mattress every night and rarely give it a second thought, and yet, having a good night’s rest is one of the most important ways to start your day right.
With new products coming out all the time, we checked in with Urner’s Zs Please Sleep Center Manager Thomas Rodriguez to find out what is trending in the market today. He said, “In the last few years, especially, the mattress industry shifted from comfort to more about wellness.” You may remember seeing mattresses rated by how soft or firm they are, but now, the focus is on things like pressure points and undisturbed sleep. He said, “one of the newest products that hits the market this year is adjustable bases, smart adjustable bases. You know how your fitbit can track your sleep in the middle of the night? Now you have adjustable bases that can do that without having to wear a bracelet to bed.” Both Serta and Simmons offer these products starting this year.
Other features that are making headlines are pillows and mattresses that will keep you feeling cool all night. That’s right, no more tossing and turning or flipping the pillow over and over trying to find the cold side. Rodriguez said, “Coolness is very important, people like to sleep cool. It’s one of the major factors of importance in the mattress industry. Tempur-pedic’s new Breeze beds actually sleep cool, which is really wonderful.” And how do they do this? “It’s treated with chemicals, to make it actually feel cooler to the touch but then underneath it, it actually absorbs your heat and kind of brings it down and pushes it away from you. So it basically keeps you cooler longer so you can fall asleep quicker,” he said, “the pillows are similar as well.” What a relief!
It’s important to consider swapping out your pillow because, he said, “I think it’s harder to pick out a pillow that works for consumers even more than a bed because it’s closer to our head. We sleep either on our side or our bellies… so it’s very hard to find a pillow that fits you. But that’s also important. We’ve had customers think they needed to replace their bed but they replace their pillows and their sleep improved.”
When mattress shopping for the first time it can be overwhelming to choose what kind of bed to buy, whether you want soft or firm, memory foam or spring. Even if you have an idea of what you prefer, selecting a mattress can leave you feeling lost as you try to decide between hundreds of products. However, some mattress stores can simplify the whole process using new technology. Rodriguez explained, “We have a You Sleep mattress recommendation system and it basically looks like a mattress and we have customers lay on it, it measures their pressure points and it recommends about how soft or firm you should go based on the pressure points.”
So there you have it, it’s easier than ever before to find the right mattress for you, whether you want to track your sleep, stay cool, or just get a good night’s rest.
