Mary Gonzalez, 29
Beef, Chicken or Veggies? I love me some meat, so chicken and beef.
Charcoal or Gas? As long as it works, they are both fine with me.
Beer or Wine? Depending on my mood I go for either beer or wine, I’m not biased.
Pool, Patio or Tailgate? Patio because that is how my family BBQs but you can never go wrong with a pool, especially in Bakersfield.
To be the host or be hosted? I don’t mind hosting but I also don’t being hosted either because then I don’t really have to worry about the clean up.
Your go-to side dish to bring? BBQ veggies.
Do you follow a family recipe or MacGyver it? I’m a free spirit so I usually MacGyver it.
Rate your grill skills (10 being a “grill master”)? Um… I’ll say about an 8 I’m not a pro but I am working on it…
Craziest place you’ve ever been kissed? A Taco Bell drive thru.
Instagram or Snapchat? I use both and I just love using the filters because even on a bad day you can still look good.
Musical instrument you played as a kid? For a brief moment I played the saxophone and I was in band.
You’re looking to embark upon a thrilling adventure in Kern County. Where do you go/what do you do? I love going up to the Kern River and exploring the trails.
Name something from your bucket list: To travel around Europe and go on a Tuscan wine tour.
What or who inspires you to be a better person? My family. I come from a strong family who welcomes you as their own from the start and I strive to live up to their legacy.
One thing you couldn’t live without? My phone definitely. We stare at it so much that sometimes we lose the moment.
TV show you are obsessed with? It’s old but The Gilmore Girls and I can’t wait for the reboot on Netflix. I’m not going to lie I have been waiting for this to happen.
Favorite local place for a first date? Bakersfield as a lot good places for a first date to parks and restaurants, but for me it’s the person and that dictates how great the place is.
On talk like a pirate day – what’s you’re favorite thing to say (in pirate of course)? Arrg… matey and I put finger up like a hook.
Mark Ritchie, 23
Beef, Chicken or Veggies? I’d probably have to say beef, you can never go wrong with a good piece of tri-tip on the grill, and then again… the west wasn’t won on a salad.
Charcoal or Gas? Charcoal. Something about the smell and slow cooking makes any meal have the utmost flavor.
Beer or Wine? My go-to would be coors light, hands down. On a hot and sunny day, with the rockies turned blue, what could be better? But as the BBQ winds down, I’m never opposed to opening a bottle of red wine, or two, and sharing conversations with good company.
Pool, Patio or Tailgate? The pool, without a doubt. The sun is shining, the beers are flowing, and the bikinis are showing!
To be the host or be hosted? I’d prefer to be the host. I like having company and entertaining guests, as well as sharing my home with friends and family.
Your go-to side dish to bring? I always bring a pack of coors light, but if it had to be food… I’d probably pick up the best looking commodity at Albertson’s or make a mean batch of chocolate chip cookies.
Do you follow a family recipe or MacGyver it? Half family recipe, half MacGyver style. I tend to play around with new recipes to see what turns out best, I enjoy having fun with my cooking and not be plain and simple every time.
What’s the secret to your secret sauce? If I told you, I’d have to kill you. All kidding aside, my secret sauce is always made with love, and you can’t beat that.
Rate your grill skills (10 being a “grill master”)? I think I would consider myself to be a solid 6.5-7. I can definitely tell you I’m not like those grillers you see on tv, but my meat’s always seasoned and cooked with care to have flavor you won’t forget.
3 words to describe your dance moves: Thirty, flirty, and thriving.
Craziest place you’ve ever been kissed? The craziest place I’ve ever been kissed would have to be at the beach; it was late at night, sitting on a rock looking up at the stars, water brushing against our feet.
Instagram or Snapchat? I’d have to say Instagram. I enjoy seeing pictures of the places people have traveled, and I get to look at it for more than 10 seconds if needed.
Musical instrument you played as a kid? Acoustic and electric guitar. I played for a few years as a kid, I wish I would have never given it up.
You’re looking to embark upon a thrilling adventure in Kern County. Where do you go/what do you do? Since there aren’t exactly too many thrilling adventures to do in Kern County, I’d have to say go on a hike in Hart Park, or flow down the Kern River.
Name something from your bucket list: Travel the world with the girl of my dreams by my side.
What or who inspires you to be a better person? My mom. She has always been there for me, through the good times and the bad. She always challenges me to be a better man than I was the day before, so I can be the best man for a future wife.
Favorite local charity or non-profit event? The Bakersfield Homeless Center.
One thing you couldn’t live without? Family. Without my family, I would be nowhere near the man I am today. Family values are a big part of my life and I hope to continue expressing those values throughout my own life.
TV show you are obsessed with? Full House, the show never gets old. I remember watching it as a kid, and still watch it today.
Favorite local place for a first date? The Mark, I mean nice restaurant, great food, good setting, and you can’t go wrong with a name like that.
On talk like a pirate day – what’s you’re favorite thing to say (in pirate of course)? Arrrr..shiver me timbers!
