Rio Acai Bowls

If you have yet to try acai (ah-sigh-ee), then you are truly missing out on a healthy and delicious treasure. But fear not! Bakersfield is right in step with the demand for this wonderful superfood, and we even have our own restaurant that is dedicated to it: Rio Acai Bowls.

Year Established: 2015
Located: 1914 Chester Ave.

The aroma of that Brazilian fruit fills the air as soon as you walk in the door. According to owner Justin Cummings, the interesting industrial-style decor that you take in (as well as most of the food) is all thanks to the work of local hands. “The wood tables, counters, and paneling was all made out of repurposed wood and constructed by Art’s Wood Craft,” he began. “The artwork that is for sale on the walls are by local artists, the coffee is from Rig City Roasting Co., and we get our organic produce from Farm Fresh Eats.”

But let’s get to the food! Acai, as a bowl, is reminiscent of frozen yogurt. It tastes like a berry, in ways, and is definitely something that you have to try out for yourself to fully appreciate what it has to offer. Imagine a dessert that is naturally good for you and also tastes amazing!

At Rio Acai Bowls, not only do you get the health benefits, but it doesn’t just stop with one fruit. You can add coconut shavings, almond and peanut butter, granola, strawberries, bananas, and, for those on a bigger health kick, bee pollen, goji berries, or hemp and chia seeds, and more. “People come here for healthier options,” Cummings detailed. “We see vegans, people with gluten allergies, and if they have additional allergies, we are able to make special bowls that are still a treat for them.”

While the bowls are incredible, they also specialize in acai smoothies for, as Cummings said, those who want some deliciousness on the go. Their Acai Smoothie is highly popular, with its berry flavor and strawberry and banana undertones. It is certain to sate that sweet tooth in the best way possible: you are consuming nothing more than fruit and ice. Now, that’s hard to beat!
