From the Farmhouse

Fewer things can brighten up the winter months quite like homemade goodies. The Farmers’ Markets in Bakersfield are absolutely brimming with such fantastic wares, and From the Farmhouse has been present and delighting locals with their jams and jellies since 2007.

(You can find them at both the Valley Farmers’ Market on F St. and also the Brimhall Farmers’ Market every Saturday.)

“We run a small family farm located in Bakersfield that specializes in growing fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as making homemade jams and jellies,” said April Verhoef. “I learned how to make jams and jellies from my grandma thirty-six years ago. All of our jams are seasonal, so once we run out of the fruit we have to wait until it comes back in season.”

One of their most popular jellies is their pomegranate, and it’s no wonder, considering just how delicious it is and the fact that it complements the season so perfectly. From the Farmhouse’s unique products make wonderful gifts or additions to family meals, as they have for generations. “Our desire is to pass along [both] the legacy that our grandparents passed down to us and the best things of our past,” Verhoef concluded. Fittingly, she was able to provide us with a recipe she found in one of her grandmother’s cookbooks! A family tradition, homemade cookies, and specialty jelly; there is a little something for everyone to enjoy!

Grandma’s Jelly Jewels

(Makes two dozen cookies)

  • 1 package yellow cake mix
  • 3/4 c. Crisco
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tbsp. milk
  • 3/4 c. finely chopped pecans or walnuts
  • From the Farmhouse Pomegranate Jelly

Dipping Egg Mixture

  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 tbsp. water

Preheat oven to 350°. Combine cake mix and Crisco in a mixer until crumbly. Add egg yolks and milk and beat on medium until completely blended. Beat egg whites and water slightly in a separate bowl.

Shape cookie dough into 1 inch balls and dip them into the egg mixture and then roll in the chopped nuts.

Place on a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake approximately 10-11 minutes or until golden brown. Make a depression with your thumb in the center of each cookie as soon as you take them out of the oven.

Let the cookies cool and fill the depression with From the Farmhouse Pomegranate Jelly.
