You really can’t go wrong with anything here, as most of us know. For a quick lunch, grab the Baked Frugatti’s Special Sandwich. For the uninitiated, this beast is loaded with ham, salami, pepperoni, and provolone cheese on ciabatta bread, then baked to perfection and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and their special dressing. Plus it’s served with a green salad on the side for just $9.59.

Both lunch and dinner menus are filled with tasty choices, from their hearty soups and crisp salads to juicy burgers and steaks. We say, for a light, healthy lunch that’s also packed with flavor, order the Veggie Linguini ($9.25). Your plate runneth over with tender linguini noodles tossed with roasted tomatoes, artichokes, spinach, and zucchini, and, of course, parmesan cheese!

When you’re in the mood for pasta or a classic Italian meat sandwich, you can’t go wrong by stopping by Luigi’s. You’ll probably run into someone you know, too. But their special Italian Dip Sandwich is to die for, so, even though it’s only available on Thursdays, it might be worth scheduling your week around. In between toasted sourdough, you’ll discover tender thin slices of tri-tip, onions, and melted provolone cheese. And of course it comes with super flavorful auju for dipping. It’s $9.75. The whole thing, not just the auju.

What else can we say about the Healthy Scramble at this more casual place in the Padre Hotel? It’s delicious, so even if you’re not intentionally cutting back on fat and calories, you could give it a try. This egg white scramble is loaded with broccoli, spinach, and asparagus, plus gooey, rich gruyere cheese. Plus, it comes with a side of fresh seasonal fruit, for just $9. (P.S. Breakfast is served from 6 a.m. until 11 a.m.)

If you like heaping portions of traditional Mexican food then El Portal has your ticket! At either location you can find plenty of flavorful items for under our $10 cut-off. One dish that really sold us was the Chile Verde Chimichanga. For $9.95, you get a huge deep fried burrito stuffed full of El Portal’s spicy and tender chile verde, rice, and beans. Then it’s topped with more chile verde and cheese and served with pico de gallo, sour cream, and guac on the side!

Ah, Urrichio’s. We love this place, as do most Bakersfieldians. It’s a happening downtown place to eat (and you’ll usually see someone you know). While they have amazing pasta dishes and yummy sandwiches, which we’ve featured before, we thought this year, we’d focus on something a little lighter for a quick and flavorful lunch without much guilt. For just $8.50 you can get the Beefsteak Tomato Salad, which comes with tender pieces of beefsteak tomato, obviously, on a bed of greens, and topped with a rich, creamy gorgonzola cheese dressing.
